Sony Clié PEG-SJ33 / NX70 / NX80V Battery Teardown Guide
Share
A dead battery is the most common reason a classic Sony Clié gets retired. The PEG-SJ33, PEG-NX70, and PEG-NX80V are still capable PDAs, but their original cells are now decades old. If your Clié shuts down early, resets randomly, or has a swollen battery, replacing the battery is the practical fix.

Step-by-Step Battery Replacement
1. Open the housing
PEG-SJ33:
Remove the rear screws and gently separate the back cover with a plastic pry tool.
PEG-NX70 / NX80V:
These clamshell models are more involved. Remove the screws around the rear housing and battery area. Be extremely careful around the hinge and display ribbon cables. Do not pull the case apart.
2. Locate the battery
Find the battery and note how the wires are routed. Take a photo before removing anything.
3. Disconnect the old battery
Release the battery connector from its socket. Pull the connector, not the wires. If there is a locking tab, lift it first.
4. Remove the old battery
If the battery is adhered to the chassis, apply a small amount of isopropyl alcohol along the edge. Wait a few seconds, then lift it slowly with a plastic card or spudger.
Never puncture or bend a lithium-ion battery.
5. Install the new battery
Connect the new battery to the socket first. Make sure it is fully seated and correctly oriented. Then place the battery into its compartment and route the wires through the original channels, away from screws, hinges, and moving parts.
6. Test before closing
Press the power button. If the device boots, reassemble the housing. If it does not, disconnect and reconnect the battery, then charge for 30 minutes and try again.
7. Charge and calibrate
Charge the Clié fully. Then use it until it shuts down automatically. Recharge fully again. Repeat this cycle two or three times so the battery meter reads accurately.
